ESMO RIfS Call v3 01

WCRP is delighted to open calls for proposals to host two dedicated international project offices in support to the new WCRP core projects: the Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO) Core Project and the Regional Information for Society (RIfS) Core Project.

The ESMO Core Project was recently formed to coordinate all modelling, data and observations activities across WCRP and to work closely with our key partners. ESMO will bring together existing elements of the WCRP structure such as the modelling Working Groups, WGCM (including CMIP activities), WGNE and WGSIP, the modelling and data activities of the other Core Projects (CLIVAR, GEWEX, SPARC, CliC and RIfS), strategic connections to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and Earth System reanalysis including recent activities (TIRA), Obs4MIPs, and joint activities with our WMO Research Board partners such as the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) Prediction Project.

The RifS Core Project represents an exciting new dimension to WCRP activities that leverages the work of existing activities from the other core projects and Lighthouse Activities, expands their scope of influence and coordinates the new research required to provide actionable climate information at the regional scale. The focus of RifS is to grow the foundations for effective links between climate research and the information needs of society, and will adaptively respond over time to those changing needs. A key scientific pillar in this new core project is the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) which will continue to advance and coordinate the science and application of regional climate downscaling.

The role of each International Project Office will be to support the work of ESMO and RIfS, respectively, in close cooperation with co-chairs and Scientific Steering Groups, the WCRP leadership and the WCRP Secretariat in Geneva.

The deadline for proposals is 31 March 2022.

All communication, material and enquiries regarding these calls shall be directed in English to Nico Caltabiano (avazcaltabiano@wmo.int) in the WCRP Secretariat.
